Hi, my name is Sorcha, I'm a guitarist and guitar teacher 12 years teaching experience. I teach all styles including pop, rock, contemporary, folk, finger-style, jazz, blues - you name it!
More specifically, I offer lessons in jazz guitar, improvisation, music theory, songwriting, music production (I use LogicProX and GarageBand.) You can combine any of these with a guitar lesson, or alternate - up to you! More on that later...
A bit about me:
Born and bred in Perth, I graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in 2013 and over the past 9 years have made a name for myself as an in demand jazz guitarist and session musician in Sydney and Melbourne.
I've performed in a wide range of musical contexts including jazz, theatre, rock, contemporary and pop, and shared the stage with some of Australia's finest musicians including award winning jazz pianist Barney McCall (SIA) and ARIA award winning jazz bassist Jonathan Zwartz.
Notable performance credits as a session musician in Sydney and Melbourne include touring as the guitarist for RockWiz Live!, TLC, Harvey Sutherland and Adrien Eagle and I have performed as a side person at notable music festivals including Splendour in the Grass, Byron Bar Blues Festival, Blues n Roots, Falls Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival among others.
I am passionate about guitar playing, but also about songwriting and composition and am currently in the process of completing my self-produced debut album of original music featuring Perth based jazz musicians and current WAAPA jazz lecturers Ben Vanderwal (drums), Karl Florrison (bass) and Harry Mitchell (keys)
My original jazz compositions with 'The Sorcha Albuquerque Trio are featured on ABC Jazztrack releases 'Jazz Calls: Best of Australian Jazz', and 'Jazztrack - Celebrating 40 years' - available on Spotify.
Now, back to teaching!
I am passionate about teaching and helping students reach their musical goals by providing a fun yet structured, non-intimidating and encouraging environment. I teach all ages, styles and levels.
I am particularly passionate about mentoring up and coming female musicians in order to promote gender diversity within the music scene. I am proud to exist as a strong mentor to young girls who are interested in learning the guitar, songwriting or getting into music production - but of course all ages, genders, levels welcome!
As I mentioned, songwriting and production lessons can exist in conjunction with your guitar lesson. Approaching learning music or an instrument through songwriting is incredibly beneficial to developing your ear, finding your sound and accessing your creativity.
