My name is Taylor Douglas, and I love playing and teaching the drums! I’ve been teaching since 2004 and it’s a true passion of mine. I believe anyone can learn the drums: all you need is patience, commitment and the right teacher!
I’ve completed my Foundation Studies in Music Performance at the Victorian College of the Arts, Music degree at Monash University & my Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) at Australian Catholic University.
Lessons are taught from home studio in Werribee but I also travel around the local areas of the schools I work at in Balwyn North & Glen Iris.
I have been studying drums since i was 8 years old, and have learnt from amazing Australian musicians such as Gordon Rytmeister, Andy Gander, Lucius Borich (Cog), Andy Fisenden, Gerry Pantazis, Dave Beck, Tony Floyd, Graham Morgan, Danny Farruigia, Gordon Rytmeister, Andy Gander and Al Kerr to name just a few. I’ve been lucky enough to study with some of best drummers for around the world, including Matt Halpern (Periphery), Dave Elitch (The Mars Volta), Tommy Igoe (author of “Groove Essentials” & leader of the Birdland Big Band), Ari Hoenig, Steve Hass, Daniel Glass (widely recognized as one of today’s foremost authorities on classic American drumming and a member of the pioneering group Royal Crown Revue), Dan Searle (Architects), Rodney Barreto (Chucho Valdez), Stanton Moore (New Orleans drumming powerhouse) and mallet percussion with Sergei Golovko and Mark Sherman (Julliard school of music).
I aim to make learning the drums a positive and enjoyable experience, but also challenging and rewarding to the student. I have my own studio set up at home, complete with 2 drumkits, stereo, internet access and many texts, which provides the student with unlimited resources and a great environment to learn in.
My aims as a teacher is simple: to challenge, motivate, engage and inspire. The learning is led by the student and their passions; from Swedish Metal to Taylor Swift, we do it all!
I encourage my students to perform regularly and design performance opportunities within ensemble and solo contexts.
I also work with other instrumental teachers to put on mid year and end of year concerts for students to showcase their skills to friends and parents.
I am proud to say many of my students have achieved outstanding results in exams and as performerss, including topping the state for VCE music performance (solo), touring nationally/internationally and becoming fantastic teachers themselves.
But what I am most proud of is that each and every one of my students has a positive experience with learning a musical instrument. That is better than any accolade!
