  • Graduate Certificate Music (ANU)
  • Master of Teaching (Deakin University)

The Bec Taylor School of Music is focused on providing a modern music education and a nurturing music community that goes beyond the typical one-on-one tuition offered by many music schools in Canberra. We offer a range of group music lessons as well as private lessons. Our ultimate goal is to provide a springboard for our students to join the Australian music industry as professional and creative performers.

We offer four types of small group lessons:
Lil Rockers: our flagship class for 5-7 yr olds to foster their early musical passion, and get them to try all the contemporary instruments together.
Bandmates: choose from our Juniors, Seniors, Masters or Adult class that gets you playing with a band, learning theory and how to write songs.
Vocal Group: choose from our Tween, Youth or Adult Vocal Groups to sing together with people in a contemporary way while learning singing technique as a group.
E-Music Production: our class for teens or adults to get you making music with new technologies, recording and writing modern styles of music.

The Bec Taylor School has 9 teachers: Beth Monzo (guitar and theory) - experienced guitar teacher, professional songwriter and performer; and Stephen Watson (drums and piano) - jazz, pop and classical pianist and songwriter; Michelle Forman (drums) - drums teacher with 10+ years teaching experience in individual, group and rock band programs; Jess High (voice) - versatile contemporary vocalist and songwriter; Anthony McIlwain (guitar) - professional guitarist, songwriter, performer and recording engineer; and Bec Taylor, founder and vocalist, pianist, drummer and songwriter.

The Bec Taylor School offers an approach to music education that specialises in progressive music-teaching that depart from the traditional technique-pieces-exams instrumental model. After recently completing a Masters of Teaching through Teach For Australia at Deakin University, Bec is developing a unique music community that is based on a combination of cutting-edge teaching practices and her extensive music industry experience.

Bec Taylor spent a decade working professionally as a performer (piano, drums and vocalist) touring nationally with several bands, she has recorded seven studio CDs, and has received critical acclaim for her songwriting, performing and recordings. Her invaluable experience as a music teacher in a high school highlighted how transformative and powerful a music learning community can be for young people, especially for young women and teenagers.

Bec Taylor is also available for private group singing and/or performance technique workshops.
