I have been training my voice since 2012 and have studied with numerous teachers both privately and at WAAPA. I began teaching voice when some of my piano students expressed an interest in accompanying themselves and composing in a singer-songwriter style.
I can teach you about the breath, the muscles involved in singing, the different registers of the voice, placement, stylistic conventions, and how to find or write songs that bring out the strengths of your own unique voice.
I can help you express yourself through improvising and songwriting, and I can give you tips and suggestions on how to add some sparkle to your existing songs.
As a member of The Baden Street Singers (Australian Mixed Barbershop Chorus Champions) and Menagerie Choir, I also have extensive knowledge of harmony singing – particularly acapella – and arranging for voice. If you sing in a group (or would like to), I can help you refine your aural skills so you know what notes will work, when to blend in, and when to let your voice shine.
Since I am primarily a pianist and composer, these lessons are more geared towards beginners, or students who want some voice training in addition to their existing instrumental skills (usually in piano or guitar).
I believe my experience as an adult learner has made me passionate about teaching beginners – particularly adults. I know about common pitfalls and mindset blocks, and I know what exercises will help you gain control and freedom. Not least of all, I know the joy that comes from finally being able to express what your innermost self has been longing to all these years.
Your lessons will be scheduled on a week-to-week basis and are to be paid in cash or via bank transfer at the start of each lesson. Please note I am not available after school/work hours on weekdays, as those times are usually reserved for piano lessons.
