Tim Newhouse is a twenty-one year old composer, musician and arranger based in, and from, Perth, Western Australia, maintaining a busy schedule as an artistic and stage composer, performer, orchestrator, copyist, musical director and teacher. Tim’s music, which can be characterised as energetic, veracious and intricate, with an emphasis on creating organic, ‘messy’ textures, dense harmonic progressions and structures that seamlessly transform, has been performed internationally and all around Australia, most notably at the World Saxophone Congress in Strasbourg, France, the Manly and Davenport Jazz Festivals, St Briavels Castle in Chepstow, Wales, MONA and Bennetts Lane Jazz Club. As an arranger, Tim has worked with Rachael Dease, the Perth Symphony Orchestra and the Perth Cabaret Collective.

Tim recently won the Jack Bendat Travel Scholarship, a grant which is funding a 2016 tour to the east coast of Australia with his compositions for jazz orchestra. At eighteen, Tim became the 2014 Associate Composer-in-Residence for the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO), earning a cash prize and a commission to write two big band works for WAYJO, which were premiered at the Perth International Jazz Festival. His performance of an original score for The Merry-Go-Round in the Sea led to him winning an adjudicators’ Finley Award. In these dramatic productions, Tim uses influences from jazz, classical, electroacoustic and experimental music to, as one reviewer puts it, “effectively complement the setting and provide the audience with a ‘window’ into the production.”

Tim is a versatile multi-woodwind instrumentalist, pianist and male vocalist. He is an active performer, involved in all sorts of projects ranging between being a featured soloist in eclectic orchestras, playing in pit orchestras for musicals and performing contemporary works with sound artists, improvisers and laptop performers. Finishing fourth in the state for WACE music, he was selected to perform at Performing Arts Perspectives. Tim has been a WAYJO musician since the age of sixteen and is currently the baritone saxophonist, flautist and bass clarinettist in their premier band, the Composers Ensemble, who regularly tour locally and interstate. He has performed and worked with local artists such as Victoria Newton, the Mace Francis Orchestra, The Idea of North, hip-hop MC Coin Banks, Daniel Susnjar and ARIA award-winner Sarah McKenzie, as well as internationally acclaimed artists such as Mike Abene, James Morrison, Darcy James Argue, Ed Partyka and Ed Neumeister.

“You have to learn the rules before you break them. Tim knows the rules and then breaks them beautifully.” – Mace Francis, WAYJO artistic director

“Incredible music, wonderfully played.” – North Street Music

“Brilliant as always, nobody knows what I am after better than him. Totally amazing.” –Amanda Crewes, The Actors Hub director

“The whimsical score and astute musical direction played an important role in this tremendous adaption… …What was surprising to us was that the score and musical direction was done by one man – and that man was only 18 years old. He showed a perception beyond his years and an understanding of the material beyond his years that will no doubt serve him well for the rest of his career.” – Kent Acott, Finley Awards adjudicator

“Tim Newhouse has created a subtle, most effective, slow (almost ad libitum) soundscape of music; at times the music was just the occasional note.” - Gordon the Optum, Independent Theatre Association

“The Newhouse Collective is an exciting new ensemble performing the original compositions of talented young composer, Tim Newhouse. With training from the WA Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), Tim and his colleagues will take you on a beautiful journey of music that tells stories that are at times profoundly moving and at others, lively and fun. Unmissable!” – Bourby Webster, Perth Symphony Orchestra founder and director
