Wendy Ju is a Melbourne-based professional cellist, performer, and cello teacher. She holds a Bachelor of Music Performance with Honours and a Master of Music Performance Teaching from the University of Melbourne. She is currently undertaking a PhD at the University of Adelaide, where she is researching cello duet repertoire, performance practice, and the development of new repertoire for two cellos. She was awarded a full scholarship to support her doctoral studies.
Wendy began her cello studies at an early age and completed her Grade 8 cello examination through Trinity College London with an excellent endorsement at the age of 12. She later studied Music Performance at the University of Auckland before moving to Melbourne in 2020 to continue her musical studies at the University of Melbourne. She completed her Bachelor of Music Performance with Honours in 2022, followed by her Master of Music Performance Teaching.
Wendy has extensive experience teaching cello to students of different ages, abilities, and musical backgrounds. She has taught in music schools, primary and secondary schools, and through private tuition, working with both individual and group classes.
Her teaching includes AMEB examination preparation as well as lessons for students who wish to learn the cello more casually or simply develop their musical skills and enjoyment. Wendy takes a supportive and individualised approach, adapting lessons to each student’s goals, learning style, and level of experience.
She believes that learning an instrument should be both rewarding and enjoyable. Alongside developing strong technical and musical foundations, she encourages students to build confidence, musical expression, and a genuine enjoyment of playing. She welcomes students of all ages, from young beginners to adult learners and more advanced students.
Wendy currently teaches cello at Xavier College and St Catherine’s School in Melbourne.
Her previous teaching experience includes the Melbourne Conservatorium Young Artist Academy (MCYAA) through the University of Melbourne, Academy of Mary Immaculate, Box Hill High School, Music World East Malvern, and Papakura Music School in New Zealand. She has also worked with the Pettman National Junior Academy of Music (PNJA), assisting teachers and administrators in supporting young musicians.
Wendy has experience performing across orchestral, chamber, and solo repertoire. She previously performed with the Auckland Symphony Orchestra, Manukau Youth Orchestra, and university orchestras in New Zealand. Since moving to Melbourne, she has performed with ensembles including the Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra, Geelong Symphony Orchestra, and Bendigo Orchestra.
Alongside orchestral performance, Wendy is active as a solo and chamber musician and regularly performs around Melbourne. She performs a diverse range of repertoire and is particularly interested in collaborative performance and the development of cello ensemble repertoire.
Wendy is also a member of LUCE Duet, a cello duo dedicated to performing repertoire for two cellos. Her work as a performer and researcher is closely connected through her doctoral research, which explores the existing cello duet repertoire while developing and commissioning new works for the instrument.
