Yiyun is an experienced piano and music theory teacher. She teaches students from entry level to LMusA. Her students have achieved very good results in AMEB practical and theory exams, school auditions, and competitions. In 2013, She gave a recital and a master class at St Aidan’s Anglican Girl’s school in Brisbane.
Yiyun Gu completed Master of Music at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music under Associate Professor Stephen McIntyre AM, who is one of Australia’s most distinguished pianists and teachers. She was awarded the 3rd prize in the 2015 ASKM (Australian Society for Keyboard Music) Gold Coast Open Piano Competition. Recently, Yiyun traveled to UK with a scholarship and a grant to participate in the Chetham's International Summer School and Festival for Pianists, where she had masterclasses with many international pianists including Leslie Howard, Murray McLachlan, Graham Scott, and Helen Krizos.
Yiyun performed in Melbourne Recital Centre as part of Spotlight Series in 2018, and got interviewed by 3MBS, Limelight Magazine, and CutCommon Magazine. She performed in Brunswick Beethoven Festival in 2016. In 2014, she was selected to perform in 3MBS “Talent” live broadcast, and she was invited to play again in 2015. She competed in the 6th China International Piano Competition and Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition in Australia in 2013, and she was one of the finalists in the 2014 and 2012 Australian National Piano Award. In March 2013, Yiyun was one of the 27 Australia’s finest pianists performed for 3MBS Beethoven Marathon at The Edge in Federation Square, Melbourne. In 2011, she performed with the Melbourne University Symphony Orchestra at Melbourne Town Hall, and was selected to participate in the Australia National Academy of Music Festival. In 2009, she gave a Debussy recital for 3MBS FM “Live at the Convent” program. Yiyun is also enthusiastic about chamber music. She is the pianist in the newly formed Cadencia Ensemble.
She accompanies for instrumentalists, vocalists and choirs. The choirs she has worked with include Victoria Chorale, Citi Opera Chorus, Sophie’s Voice and the University of Melbourne Vocal Ensemble. She played in ‘High School’ musical show series at St Bernards College in 2011.
Besides her musical attributes, Yiyun has a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s degree in commerce.
