Sight-reading is an important and useful ability to have as a musician. It is a crucial skill to develop if you are required learn pieces quickly. The advantages of being a good sight-read is that

  • you understand styles of music better
  • you can read a score and hear the music,
  • you are can get things done quicker, i.e. more pieces learnt
  • you can work in opera, in an orchestra, as an accompanist, and do any last minute gigs with ease.

I have been sight-reading music since I was 7 or 8 and in a few months I was able to learn of the children's book of pieces. My repertoire spans up to 500 solo works, 30 concertos and 50 chamber works, all came from the sight-reading skills to allow me to get pieces learnt quickly. I will share with you the skills I experimented and developed in sight-reading to make your life easier.
