I have been studying with Alexey intermittently from 2010. I initially began piano studies following the completion of my Ph.D at UNSW in order to obtain the AmusA diploma, which would then help me get a temporary piano tutoring job to help with bills while looking for a full time job. Alexey's instruction at this time was critical in helping me to successfully pass the exam and obtain my diploma. Not only did he help me directly with respect to passing my exam, but as it turned out he was well known to staff who were hiring piano tutors at the JOAN (Penrith Conservatorium), and consequently I got a part time piano tutoring position.
After some time teaching there, I decided to attempt the more difficult and highly regarded LmusA, and perhaps pursue performing more seriously. I turned to Alexey once again, and yet again I received the instruction and support that I needed, and successfully passed the Licentiate exam on my first attempt. Alexey's guidance was steady and geared towards a successful outcome. There is no doubt in my mind that without his mentorship I would not have passed the exam. Subsequently, he has helped me prepare for two recitals, one a full length Bach recital, the other a half length but nevertheless very demanding Bach recital, both of which were a great success.
I have over the years, found his lessons to be very sensitive to my particular circumstances both in terms of preparing myself for the psychological stresses that difficult performances entail, and in taking into account my work responsibilities in terms of providing advice on how to deal with complex work matters. I have found the lessons to always be very structured and detailed, with focus not only on specific musical and technical matters but also on process and what I would call cognitive behavioural techniques. In fact, it is in this area that I have been impressed most, and no doubt this comes out so naturally in his teaching as he is an accomplished pianist who is actively performing. I would highly recommend Alexey to anybody wishing to develop their piano performing skills to their utmost and advance in a difficult and competitive professional musical environment. I hope to continue lessons with Alexey on Skype despite his recently announced move to Tasmania, and like many others will miss his concerts that he has given here in the Sydney area. It is hoped that he will make frequent visits and to continue to stay in touch with his fans and students here.
