I'm Andrew Fong, a professional performing clarinettist. I started teaching in 2011 and have been refining my craft ever since.
I am currently the specialist clarinet tutor at schools with thriving music programs such as John Paul College and Stuartholme School. During my tenure I've taught students past an AMus level including many that have gone on to study music at a tertiary level.
I would love the opportunity to impart the knowledge, excitement and experience that music and playing clarinet offered me throughout my career.
My teaching style is encouraging and friendly to all ages with a focus on establishing a strong foundation of technique and musical literacy. This enables students to enjoy making music and find success regardless of their level or goals.
My tertiary music studies occurred in Melbourne where I was lucky enough to study with inspiring clarinet pedagogues such as Paul Dean (Former Queensland Symphony Orchestra Principal, currently lecturing at UQ) and David Griffiths (Clarinet lecturer at Melbourne University) and David Thomas (Principal of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra). During my time at the Australian National Academy of Music, I was lucky to receive incredible lessons with many of best clarinettists in the world such as Michael Collins, Thorsten Johanns, Dimitri Ashkenazy, Phillip Arkinstall and Justin Beere. My time at ANAM saw my ABC radio solo debut with Debussy's 'Premiere Rhapsody' for clarinet and piano in 2018.
I've had performance opportunities with the Australian World Orchestra, Australian Youth Orchestra in an international Tour (2019), Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, Victorian Opera. I currently perform with Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Southern Cross Soloists and the Candlelight Concert Orchestra in Brisbane.
I offer lessons of all lengths at my studio in Fortitude Valley or at a student's location of choice for a small travel fee (vary depending on location). A 30 minute free trial lesson is available for those that would like it.
Online lessons with flexible availability are available.
