My name is Kenneth O’Brien and I’ve been playing piano since I was 7 years old. I have achieved Grade 8 AMEB for piano, Grade 7 trumpet and Grade 5 musicianship, but I play and arrange many pieces outside exam repertoire, such as movie and TV soundtracks, recent music and animé songs. I have extensive experience both as a professional performer and as a recording artist. I believe it is important to find a good balance between exam goals and pieces/songs students enjoy playing and listening to, which I’m happy to teach along with any exam preparation. I’m also able to do sheet music arrangements of songs for students to suit their playing ability and to teach the student methods of arranging their own versions of songs if they are interested. If a student is wanting to sit an exam then the majority of lesson time will go to exam preparation. I believe each student should practice consistently and work diligently towards their goals and more efficient ways of playing while adding emotion and musicality to each piece of music. Most of all, I believe music should be fun.
