Yii Ying is not only a pianist and established pedagogue, she is also an experienced accompanist and chamber musician. She has won the Monash University Chamber Music Prize when she was only in her first year of Bachelor Degree, and she has extensive experience working with instrumentalists.


Renowned for her passion and restless curiosity, Yii Ying is a young Melbourne based Malaysian pianist who is enthusiastic about classical music, particularly music by lesser-known composers. She gave up two opportunities to work in commerce fields as well as two scholarships in order to pursue her music passion and is currently finishing up her double degree – Bachelor of Commerce/Music under Dr Kenji Fujimura at Monash University – The Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, majoring in classical piano.

Born in 1996, she has been playing the piano since she was six under the tutelage of Chelsia Yu, Michael Clulow and Nathan Liow. Since then, she has performed and competed in cities across the world such as New York City (USA), Shanghai (China), Yantai (China), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Melbourne (Australia) and Prato (Italy). Her most recent achievements include performing at a sold-out solo recital in Kuching, Malaysia (2019) as well as achieving Silver Prize (Young Artist) and Bronze Prize (Open Category) in the Kingsburg International Piano Competition in Yantai, China (2018).

In 2017, she came 2nd in the East Coast International Competition and was invited to perform in the prestigious Lincoln Centre, New York City. She was also one of the few competitors amongst 13,000 competitors to be selected to proceed to the final live round for the 2016 Shanghai International Music Festival Piano E-Competition and has won the Elite Prize for Piano Ensemble Category and Finalist
Award in the Piano Solo Adult Group A Category. In the same year, she was also the semi-finalist of the International Piano Festival and Competition in Malaysia.

Yii Ying does not only enjoy as performing as a soloist, she is also an enthusiast for chamber music. She has performed multiple piano trio works, piano for four hands as well as piano for six hands works which includes theatrical elements, and even piano works arranged for 32 hands. She is a recipient of the Chamber Music Prize given by the Faculty of Arts at Monash University, as well as a recipient of Bernies Music Land Classical Piano Award for two years in a row. As an avid supporter of living composers, she has premiered and recorded works by various composers. Recent projects include being specifically chosen by one of the most prominent Australian musicians Paul Grabowsky to be involved in the Monash Arts Ensemble to premiere and record his composition. She was also chosen to perform live on 3MBS Radio Station as part of “The Talent Live Performance” series, premiering works by Michael Clulow.

Yii Ying is also an active performer as well as participant in masterclasses. She has performed in various venues such as Robert Blackwood Hall, Melbourne Recital Centre, Beleura House, Duneira House, Federation Square, Abbotsford Convent and St Collins Church. She has also been involved with masterclasses conducted by renowned musicians and composers, such as Leslie Howard, Anatoly Dokumentov, Rolf Plagge, Geoffrey Saba, Jane Hammond, Tamara Smolyar and Len Vorster.
