Yii Ying is not only an experienced pianist and accompanist, she is also an established music teacher. She is teaching students as young as 4 years old to adult students, from classical music to contemporary, and her students level varies from beginner to Grade 8.
Being a passionate and enthusiastic teacher, she always tries her best to make sure that students are engaged and are enjoying her lesson. She believes that each student has unique learning needs and often tailor the curriculum to match the student’s needs. She focuses on musicality and expressions, general music knowledge, techniques, sight-reading skills and theory.
She speaks English, Mandarin and Malay.
Renowned for her passion and restless curiosity, Yii Ying is a young pianist who is enthusiastic about classical music, particularly music by lesser-known composers. She has recently obtained a double degree – Bachelor of Music/Commerce, studying under Dr. Kenji Fujimura at Monash University – The Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, majoring in classical piano.
Born in 1996 in Malaysia, she has been playing the piano since she was six under the tutelage of Chelsia Yu, Michael Clulow and Nathan Liow. Since then, she has won a number of international and local competitions. Recent achievements include performing Etruscan Concerto by Glanville-Hicks with the Monash Academy Orchestra under the baton of Tianyi Lu as well as a sold out solo recital in Kuching, Malaysia, and performance in the Lincoln Centre, New York City. She has won Silver Prize (Young Artist) and Bronze Prize (Open Category) in the Kingsburg International Piano Competition in Yantai, China. Her musical pursuit was supported by the Monash University Elite Student Performer Scheme and Yayasan Sarawak.
She was also one of the few amongst 13,000 competitors to be selected to proceed to the final live round for the 2016 Shanghai Spring International Music Festival Piano E-Competition and had won the Elite Prize for the Piano Ensemble Category and Finalist Award for the Piano Solo Adult Group A Category.
Yii Ying does not only enjoy playing as a soloist and an accompanist, she is also an enthusiast of chamber music. She is a recipient of Bernies Music Land Classical Piano Award for two years in a row and also a recipient of the Chamber Music Prize given by the Faculty of Arts at Monash University. Recent projects includes a performance and recording project with the Monash Arts Ensemble. She was specifically chosen by Paul Grabowsky to be involved in the ensemble. She looks forward to travel and perform more in the future.
Yii Ying was chosen to perform in 3MBS Radio Station The Talent Series Live Performance and also was involved in the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music Piano CD Recording. She has also been actively performing at masterclasses by great pianists and composers such as Rolf Plagge, Tamara Smolyar, Anatoly Dokumentov, Leslie Howard, Geoffrey Saba and Jane Hammond. She had performed in numerous concerts and events, held at the Federation Square, Duneira House, Beleura House, Abbotsford Convent, Collins St Baptist Church and the Melbourne Recital Centre.
