Small-group band lessons that teach jazz improvisation and small-ensemble playing techniques in a band setting. Students learn as they play real jazz music in a band. Rehearsals are in our St Leonards studio.

A jazz combo is a small group, of up to ten musicians. At Jazz Workshop the combos rehearse once per week with an expert tutor. The main teachers are Dr Saul Richardson, Jack Stoneham, Gavin Ahearn, and Peter Farrar. Combos give you the chance to apply and put into practice the work and theory you learn with your teacher, and really give your playing a boost.

Regular experience playing in a jazz combo almost certainly gives a great advantage in HSC music, and is virtually essential for anyone hoping to get into the Jazz course at the Sydney Conservatorium. From 2022-2023, 16 JWA students were accepted into the Conservatorium, a track record unequalled anywhere in Australia.

The groups are open to everyone (you don't have to be taking lessons at JWA).
There are groups for all levels and ages including adults!! They are streamed by jazz experience and ability, and work through a structured program. The aim isn't just to play tunes, it is to become more and more advanced as you progress through the course.
